Gov. Tony Evers is requesting $150,000 in federal grant money to pay for a new statue on the Capitol grounds of Vel Phillips, the state’s first Black secretary of state, according to a Wisconsin State Journalreport.

Roughly $50,000 would be used to restore the statues of Col. Hans Heg and “Forward” that were damaged in June when protests turned destructive. The funding request has been submitted to the National Endowment of the Arts and the National Endowment of the Humanities.
