Gov. Tony Evers on Thursday released a statement regarding a new lawsuit against President Donald Trump and the Trump administration, urging the president to stop efforts to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. Evers was formerly a teacher, principal, superintendent, and state superintendent before becoming governor.
Excerpts from his statement are as follows:
“Efforts to try and eliminate the Department of Education will hurt Wisconsin’s kids and our public schools. … Doing what’s best for our kids is what’s best for our state, and this decision will be a disaster for our kids and their futures. … It will make it harder to improve outcomes, class sizes will get even bigger, educators and staff could lose their jobs, and schools may be forced to close their doors for good.
“I continue to urge Congressional Republicans to stand up to efforts to undermine our constitutional checks and balances and stop these reckless attacks on our kids, our schools, our communities, and our state.”
