Under Gov. Tony Evers’ proposed budget, Wisconsin would create a health insurance marketplace and a public option plan that would allow residents to buy into BadgerCare, the state’s main Medicaid program, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report. The measure aims to save the state money and provide insurance for many who might lose coverage if the Affordable Care Act is struck down.
If approved, Wisconsin would be added to the list of 21 states that have state-based marketplaces. The option is projected to cover 90,900 additional people and save the state $634 million by tapping additional federal funds. The plan would also expand benefits such as addiction treatment and enable more payments to providers such as hospitals and nursing homes.
