North side Madison’s The Esquire Club is being turned over by the Kavanaugh family to new ownership, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The supper club at 1025 N. Sherman Ave. has been in the family for 77 years.

The property remains under Kavanaugh ownership, but Craig Spaulding is buying the restaurant and says he intends to retain its name but make some key updates. He intends to operate the spot, which has a capacity of 300, as “an upscale supper club-style restaurant with artisanal cocktails” and said it will offer catering and small-scale live music.

The deal is set to go through in about a month; Spaulding is set to take over March 21 if he obtains a provisional license. He is currently working at the supper club’s bar. Spaulding plans for operating hours to be 11 a.m.–2 a.m. daily.
