The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Advocacy found that nearly 30% of the population under the age of 40 is self-employed, WMTV15 reports. The news follows Simply Business’ national report, which put business ownership among Americans under 40 at a 20-year high.
The rise in people pursuing their own businesses is correlated with recent downsizing, and, according to Small Business Administration District Director Eric Ness, many younger people want control over their careers.
The SBA’s SCORE Business Mentoring program provides support to small business owners by connecting them with experts. Other SBA programs are aimed toward veterans or women in business. A full list of programs is available here.
