In response to a slashed federal budget, the FAA announced it would close 149 air traffic control towers, including eight in Wisconsin, beginning April 7. Towers in Janesville, Waukesha, La Crosse, Eau Claire, Oshkosh, and at Milwaukee’s Timmerman Field are among the state casualties. The airports will not close down, but pilots will be forced to coordinate takeoffs and landings using other known procedures, such as a shared radio frequency, with no help from ground controllers.
