Edgewood College will become Edgewood University later this year, a move its president, Andrew Manion, says reflects its breadth of program options, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. With the approval of both the board of trustees and the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, the change will go into effect July 1.

Manion says Edgewood has been “effectively operating as a university” since it added master’s degree programs in 1986. It added doctoral degrees as well in 2001.

While the terms “university” and “college” are often used synonymously, universities tend to be perceived as institutions with larger student populations and graduate and undergraduate programs, while colleges tend to be seen as smaller institutions for undergraduate students.
