Edgewater Disappointments and Other Thoughts

The companies, people and issues shaping business in Madison and the Capital Region.

  • We’ve likely lost a unique opportunity. Most disappointments I’ve suffered in my life end up being positive in the long run. But I just can’t imagine a better opportunity for the Edgewater property than the one that was offered. Can you? Outside-the-box thinking here — what could be better? What will happen now?
  • Another black mark that confirms Madison’s reputation as being unfriendly to business. By the way, this also hurts the hotel owners who opposed the Edgewater project. They were understandably upset with the prospect of TIF-subsidized-competition. But would you want to own a hotel in a stagnant obstructionist city, or one in a forward-thinking city with a positive national image.
  • Is an 11-hour marathon a good way to make critical decisions? Is physical and mental endurance a criterion for elected officials who are expected to represent their constituents? Would you want a representative of your company to make critical decisions under similar circumstances?
  • Three Alders were absent. There’s a good chance their presence would have changed the outcome. In this day of total electronic interconnectivity isn’t a bit antiquated to require physical presence of the designated decision-makers?
  • If you share even a few of my concerns above, please encourage business-understanding individuals to run for the Madison Common Council in the next election.
