The Department of Workforce Development’s (DWD) actual jobs data for the third quarter of 2012 showed the state adding 20,481 private-sector jobs from September 2011 to September 2012. Earlier estimates showed a loss of 2,100 private-sector jobs year to year. The difference is 22,581 jobs. There was a 2% increase in manufacturing jobs, with 8,794 added, but a 0.7% decrease in government jobs. DWD compiles jobs data from unemployment records from nearly 96% of Wisconsin businesses.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will review and incorporate DWD’s data into its next Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, scheduled for release in March.

BLS uses three data sets to measure employment and unemployment: the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, the Local Area Unemployment Statistics, and the Current Employment Statistics (CES) report. The first two showed significant job gains from September 2011 to September 2012 (20,481 and 15,709, respectively), while the CES reported 2,100 jobs lost for the period.
