The UW Community Arts Collaboratory is celebrating youth arts with Drum Power Africa Night and Whoopensocker LIVE! in the Starlight Theater at Madison Youth Arts Center (MYArts).

Drum Power Africa Night’s 11th annual citywide recital features students from grades three–eight from Madison schools, including Lowell and Leopold Elementary Schools and O’Keeffe Middle School.

The event will take place May 17 at 6 p.m., featuring youth performers and master drummers, including professional guest artists from the Limanya Drum and Dance Ensemble. Donations raise funds to support scholarships for Drum Power’s Summer Drum, Dance and Arts Camp, which will be held July 22–Aug. 2. There will also be an Intergenerational Community Arts Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 3, with drum and dance classes taught by master artists Assane Konte and Quenia Reibeiro. The classes are open to all ages and abilities.

Whoopensocker LIVE! will feature works from Lincoln, Sandburg, Hawthorne, Emerson, and Stephens elementary schools. The event will take place May 18 at 11 a.m. and include a combination of sketches, songs, and physical theater.
