When the current Public Safety Building in downtown Madison was originally constructed over 20 years ago, it was expected that additional floors could be added in the future.
But after a recent structural analysis, architects and engineers from Mead & Hunt and Potter Lawson have determined that the building — while safe in its current state — cannot support four more stories.
As a result, according to a report in the Wisconsin State Journal, a new building will likely be built behind the current Public Safety Building on what now is a county-owned parking lot. The building is being expanded as part of a plan to consolidate the Dane County Jail.
Costs of the new structure are being calculated.
