An audit of the state Department of Transportation has determined that the agency underfunded projects and did not allow for inflation and unexpected overages when pricing 16 major and ongoing road projects around the state, resulting in a total underestimation of nearly $3.1 billion, according to a story in The Capital Times.
The DOT also failed to follow its own plan to streamline operations in recent years, which could have saved millions, as well.
With a projected $1 million shortfall in the transportation fund and a Governor who has refused to increase the state’s gasoline tax, many lawmakers remain at odds with Gov. Scott Walker as to how to address the state’s declining road conditions.
