The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) along with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection are seeking a contractor to dispose of 25,000 gallons of firefighting foam containing toxic PFAS “forever” chemicals, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report. As part of the 2020 PFAS action plan, the current state budget contains $1 million for foam disposal. A 2020 survey of fire departments allowed the DNR to estimate there were 63,200 to 96,300 gallons of firefighting foam in the state and that more than 30,000 gallons were expired or unwanted.
