Following a natural gas leak that caused the evacuation of nearby homes, Wisconsin DNR Secretary Karen Hyun has asked Enbridge to halt work on the rerouting of its Line 5 natural gas pipeline, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
In a letter to Enbridge, Hyun requested the pause while the DNR investigates the Aug. 25 spill, which occurred in Iron County.
According to Enbridge, the leak was caused by an unoccupied truck that rolled into an excavation site and hit the pipeline.
In her letter to Enbridge, Hyun made reference to past “noncompliance” events.
“The agency is deeply concerned about this spill and immensely frustrated by other recent noncompliance events and has several outstanding questions of Enbridge and would appreciate written responses as expeditiously as possible,” she said in the letter.
Enbridge, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta Canada, has yet to publicly respond to the letter.
