Minneapolis-based developer Mortenson Development has proposed the final piece of the Judge Doyle Square project in downtown Madison, an 11-story, 222-unit apartment building and parking garage, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report. When finished, this last element will complete the $175 million project that has taken more than a decade to complete. Mortenson Development assumed construction rights for a nine-story, 260-room hotel at the project site from Beitler Real Estate Services last year and is now moving to take over rights for the last piece of the two-block redevelopment. Mortenson plans to implement an ambitious construction schedule, starting work on the hotel in the coming months and the apartment tower perhaps later this year. To accept the change, the city must amend a development agreement with Beitler to assign development rights to Mortenson and enter into a purchase and sale agreement with the developer. Both agreements will need city council approval.
