Galway Companies has forwarded a proposal to demolish the Washington Plaza shopping center at East Washington Avenue and North First Street and build a seven-story, mixed-use project with housing and commercial space, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report.

The site is next to the future home of the Madison Public Market. The proposed project would raze the current 39,696-square-foot strip mall at 1858 E. Washington Ave. and replace it with 344 apartments, 15,000 square feet of commercial space, and structured and surface parking spaces.
