Developer Randy Alexander is proposing a 16-story, 335-unit apartment building at 139 W. Wilson St. to help satisfy the demand for lower-cost housing for workers in downtown Madison, according to a report from the Wisconsin State Journal. The new approach to the higher-density housing project includes razing the existing 60-year-old Shorecrest Apartments and replacing them with 25 units and 1,860 square feet of office space at the site.
Alexander seeks to deliver affordability through small apartments on the nearly half-acre narrow lot with views of Lake Monona. In addition to the housing units, the project would include a 3,620-square-foot, open-space garden, car-charging stations, a fitness center, a community lounge, a mini-kitchen, and meeting rooms. The target market for the project includes people in the hospitality industry and others who want to live downtown. The development goes before the Urban Design Commission on March 9 for an informational presentation.
