Consulting firm Deloitte was hired for $395,000 to evaluate financial and budget controls for the University of Wisconsin-Madison between March and July 2025, the Cap Times reports.

The evaluation followed the university’s removal of LaVar Charleston as its vice chancellor for inclusive excellence due to “poor financial judgment,” according to an internal review. He directed the Division of Diversity, Equity and Educational Achievement.

The division has since been dissolved as a standalone department.

The report found an issue with the totality of financial choices and excessive spending on bonuses, travel and supplies. And administrative management systems were not structured to prevent such spending.

Deloitte made suggestions to the university, which a representative told the Cap Times the university will pursue, including changes to the structure of human resources and a review of expense policies.
