Wisconsin Public Radio reports that DeForest is going to reintroduce fluoride into its water supply after it removed the mineral about a year ago.

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has previously celebrated water fluoridation as one of the greatest public health achievements of the 20th century.

However, misinformation on fluoride has taken root over the years, and last February, DeForest trustees voted 4-3 to stop adding fluoride to the village’s water supply.

On Jan. 20, a 5-2 vote directed village staff to prepare a resolution to reverse the anti-fluoride resolution.

The new resolution could be approved in February, but it will most likely take months before fluoride is once again introduced.

The change on fluoride can be credited to the addition of two new trustees in office, and in September, DeForest residents voted to remove anti-fluoride Trustee Bill Landgraf from office partway through his two-year term.
