The village of DeForest saw a strong year of housing development, according to The Star. Updates regarding the state of housing growth were provided at the village’s Committee of the Whole meeting last week.

Zoning administrator Brandi Cooper outlined the building permits issued and new housing constructed between 2020 and the current day. Data showed DeForest emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic in solid shape, with the creation of 250 housing units in 2021, including 125 multifamily units. Between 2022–23, however, just 285 units total were built, including 71 and 70 multifamily units, respectively.

Past the halfway point of 2024, housing development has picked up once again, with permits awarded to create 231 housing units by the end of the year, including 54 single-family and 153 multifamily units. The village is thus poised to meet its housing quota specified by the Dane County Regional Housing Strategy, which calls on DeForest to build about 175 housing units each year.
