A petition from opponents of the proposed data center in DeForest went nowhere during a Tuesday meeting from the DeForest Village Board, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.
The petition would have required a referendum prior to approval of a data center development. A village attorney said the proposal was illegal.
“No Data Center in DeForest” circulated the petition, collecting over 1,000 signatures.
QTS Data Centers proposed a data center campus to be constructed on 1,600 acres of farm land located in Vienna.
Data centers have prompted concerns in Wisconsin due to water and land usage, and how the centers will affect energy costs for consumers.
