Dane County Humane Society is asking for pet food and cat litter donations for an emergency pet food drive.

DCHS said in a statement it has been hearing more from families who are thinking about surrendering their pets because they can’t afford their care with SNAP benefits on hold.

“It’s a challenging time, but no one should ever have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their pets,” Lisa Bernard, DCHS’s development and communications supervisor, said in a statement. “We want to keep people and their pets together, but we can’t do it alone. We need our community’s help.”

The Humane Society will accept donations of unopened cat and dog food, wet and dry, and cat litter beginning Nov. 5 through Nov. 7 between 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at 5132 Voges Road in Madison. Families can pick up food and litter on Nov. 8 from 9 a.m.-noon.
