Dayton Square, a proposed 12-story high-rise apartment complex in the 400 block of West Johnson Street in Madison, received the Madison Plan Commission’s blessing and is headed to the City Council for final approval. The $40 million, 319-unit structure, built without any TIF subsidy, would require the demolition of three buildings that currently house a total of 128 lower-priced rental units ($590 to $950 per month). Rents in the new building are expected to be in the $1,000 to $2,000 range, raising some questions about the availability of affordable housing downtown.
