Dane County Executive Joe Parisi has included $810,000 in his 2021 capital budget for a new nonprofit organization to purchase land to build a proposed Center for Black Excellence and Culture, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report.
The center will be located on 3.5 acres on the 700 block of West Badger Road along the Beltline and be a central place for Madison’s Black community to gather, celebrate its culture, and network with Black professionals. The proposal includes demolishing buildings that house staff for the Fountain of Life Covenant Church and the Nehemiah Center for Urban Leadership Development. The anticipated budget for the center is $18–$20 million.
