A new Dane County “sustainability campus” is set to break ground on Madison’s southeast side next spring, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The future waste-handling site will recycle and divert waste from an over 80-acre landfill planned to break ground nearby in 2027.

Phase one of the sustainability campus’ construction is estimated to cost roughly $36 million. The project will include a 20,000-square-foot “waste education center” and business park that will work to find new waste solutions, including marketing and repurposing raw materials headed for the dump.

The design process is reportedly about 75% complete. Construction on the site will continue over a couple of years.

The project will work to address waste in Dane County, which totals over 450,000 tons annually.
