Dane County is looking to develop a solar energy site on a Verona property that was formerly a county-owned landfill, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The new solar array would power the county’s campus in Verona, which includes a nursing home, a food service facility, and a food pantry.
The county has used methane from the landfill for electricity generation for roughly 30 years, but methane levels are declining, prompting the potential site repurposing.
The county is seeking a partner to help develop the site and intends to issue a request for proposals.
Seventeen county facilities currently use solar energy and the other two county sites — the Dane County Regional Airport and a Cottage Grove site — house large solar fields.
