The Dane County Board of Supervisors at its meeting on Thursday recognized August 2024 as Transgender History Month.
The month recognizes the history and contributions of transgender leaders and members of the community, honoring the struggles and achievements of transgender people. It is also an opportunity to affirm the presence of transgender people in the community and throughout the world.
August was declared Transgender History Month in the city and county of San Francisco in August 2021. Dane County is among the few counties to have followed suit in the time since. In June 2023, the board also passed a resolution declaring Dane County a sanctuary for trans and nonbinary individuals.
The resolution highlights the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project, an organization dedicated to preserving and documenting the history of the LGBTQ community in Wisconsin.
