According to a recent press release, in 2022 Dane County conducted a pilot program permitting the use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) on County Trunk Highway Y in Mazomanie. The program was a success and demonstrated that ATVs and UTVs can safely operate on county roads when certain conditions are met.

In response to the successful pilot program, the County Board will be voting on 2023 OA-031, which will create a permit process affording a person, organization, or municipality the opportunity to expand the use of ATVs and UTVs on certain county trunk highways.

If the ordinance amendment is approved, permits will be required to establish new ATV/UTV routes on county trunk highways. Applications for permits will be made available online.
