To prevent flooding, protect water resources, and create more outdoor recreation, Dane County has made its largest conservation land purchase of 2020 in the town of Verona, according to a report from the Wisconsin State Journal.

The 160-acre property between the state Department of Natural Resources’ Sugar River Wetlands Natural Resource Area and the county’s Falk Wells Sugar River Wildlife Area is located within the boundaries of both the Badger Mill Natural Resource Area and the Sugar River Natural Resource Area. The $3 million purchase will prevent the area from being developed and restore much of the wetlands, creating more floodwater storage and providing an improved fish and wildlife habitat.
