Dane County’s Personnel & Finance Committee unanimously recommended a resolution to make Juneteenth, commemorated annually on June 19, as a paid day off for government employees beginning in 2021, according to a report from The Capital Times. The holiday recognizes the date in 1865 when enslaved African-Americans in Texas learned of their freedom.
The paid holiday designation would create an additional $66,000 in overtime and holiday pay next year. The resolution needs the approval of the Dane County Board of Supervisors.
