The Dane County Board has passed along its 2023 budget to County Executive Joe Parisi for signing, according to a Wisconsin State Journalreport. The budget includes investments in housing, a new election center, and criminal justice reform measures. If signed by Parisi, the $853 million budget would increase property taxes on the average Madison home by $40.51 per year. Budget highlights include:

  • $16 million for a new election center that would relocate the Dane County Clerk’s Office;
  • $1.5 million to help Madison close a funding gap for the Madison Public Market on the city’s east side, contingent on the city providing $4 million;
  • $350,000 to hire a consultant for the Alliant Energy Center redevelopment project and a market analysis for the expo;
  • $359,000 to secure hotel housing for people who are eligible for jail diversion programs but can’t access them due to lack of housing; and
  • $1.3 million to support ongoing planning for a 24/7 mental health treatment center.
