Construction on Maurer’s Urban Market, a new, full-service grocery store, will soon begin on South Park Street, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. Interior design work for the 24,000-square-foot space is set to be completed in the next two weeks, with construction starting later this month. Owner/operator Kristi Maurer expects to open the store by late summer or early fall.

The news follows nearly four years of delays in developing the spot, after another grocer backed out of the project in 2021, and $1 million in design problems were found with the space in 2024. Maurer stepped into the project in May 2023 and signed a 15-year lease with the city of Madison in November 2024. The city owns the grocery and condo space on the first floor of the $43 million, six-story apartment building at the corner of South Park and Cedar streets.
