The Trump administration’s final changes to the federal environmental review process on the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) will maintain environmental rigor and accelerate infrastructure improvements, according to the CEO of the Associated General Contractors of America, Stephen E. Sandherr.

According to a release from the construction industry advocacy group, the change in the NEPA will make it easier to rebuild aging infrastructure, attract private investment, and support efforts to reinvigorate the economy. The revision to the 50-year-old law cuts back federal review of the impact on the environment from construction projects.

The NEPA was signed into law in 1970 and was the first of several fundamental environmental laws, along with the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act.
