Companies continue to scramble from biggest ransomware attack

The single biggest ransomware attack to date continues to hurt businesses as more details emerge about the attack, according to a report from Associated Press. A Russia-linked gang breached an exploited software company and criminals were able to use a tool that helps protect against malware. The company Kaseya’s product was exploited to infect thousands of organizations in at least 17 countries. The attack by the notorious REvil gang came just as a long Fourth of July weekend began and many more victims were expected to learn their fate when they return to the office Tuesday. REvil is best known for extorting $11 million from the meat processor JBS last month and security researchers said its ability to evade anti-malware safeguards in this attack exploits a previously unknown vulnerability on Kaseya servers. Ransomware attacks infiltrate networks and paralyze them by scrambling data, extorting their victims.
