As fewer people are out and about shopping, eating, and drinking, fewer coins are in circulation, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report.
The pandemic has also disrupted production at the U.S. Mint and the coin shortage is affecting businesses such as laundromats and businesses that handle mainly cash transactions. Businesses are asking customers to pay with exact change or use debit or credit cards.
