The Coca-Cola Co., which has been working with Madison-based Virent for several years, has made another significant capital investment in the company. Virent’s technology turns plant sugars into fuels and chemicals that can be substituted for petroleum, and Coke’s investment will allow Virent to purchase additional equipment that could lead to the production of recyclable, plant-based bottles in the future. The Coca-Cola Co. wants to have such bottles on the market by 2020. The amount of the investment was not disclosed.
