In recognition of July as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Mental Health Awareness Month, a Dane County-funded coalition targeting the issue of mental health disparities among BIPOC populations has been launched. The coalition is committed to advocating for system-level changes grounded in the principles of belonging, dignity, and antiracism.
Since its formation, the coalition has officially held three meetings and has had several community members and organizations join its lead advisory group. The group is co-facilitated by RISE Wisconsin and Journey Mental Health Center and comprises BIPOC leaders.
The coalition is focusing its work on multiple areas of individual and family mental health care and substance use treatment, including but not limited to trauma, substance use, end-of-life, and the consequences of systemic racism and white supremacy across the lifespan.
