The city of Madison is moving forward with the latest of a series of property purchases along South Park Street, where a future development is planned just south of Wingra Creek, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. The city is looking to buy the site at 1814 S. Park St., near its previous purchases at 1810 S. Park Street, 814 and 826 North Ave., and 1901–1915 S. Park St. (a former strip mall).

The Finance Committee this week approved the $3.7 million purchase, and it will now go before the City Council. The Plan Commission in December gave the green light  for the demolition of the buildings already acquired. The city plans to raze the new property as well.

In the absence of the prior buildings, the city will clean up the sites, add needed infrastructure, and seek a developer. Plans call for a mix of income-restricted and market-rate housing, and commercial space. The city is also seeking to expand parkland near the 1800 block properties and the addition of a public crossing to the railroad tracks behind them.
