Proposed actions from the city of Madison’s planning team for the southwest and southeast areas of Madison now have interactive story maps available for the community to peruse.
Infrastructure and development are the main focus of the Southwest and Southeast Area Plans, and the maps provide the community with a more intuitive way to review the proposed work ahead of an in-person public meeting on Tuesday, from 6-7:30 p.m. More meetings are planned for later this month and on Nov. 4.
The public can still view a regular document full of the recommendations, as well as the context. The interactive story map offers a visual component, an effort to help people better understand the proposed recommendations.
“These draft recommended actions are the result of months of work from the Area Plan teams and rooted in the hundreds of pieces of feedback we’ve received so far from the people living in these parts of Madison,” said Jaymes Langrehr, public information officer for the city’s Department of Planning, Community and Economic Development. “The main thing we heard from people in both the southeast and southwest areas were concerns about transportation and traffic safety, especially when it comes to speeding in neighborhoods surrounding schools and on major roads, as well as dangerous road crossings.
“Both plans are proposing a number of improved pedestrian street crossings, shared-use paths and traffic-calming measures to address those concerns.”
The process is still in a stage where community feedback can inform what ends up in the final drafts submitted for approval next year. Langrehr hopes the maps will make proposals easier to understand, so more people interact with the draft plans and share their thoughts with city staff during the upcoming meetings.
