Among the items funded in the city of Madison’s budget, which was approved Tuesday night, is a 10th ambulance company in the Madison Fire Department and more money to support its mission to build new homes in Madison.

A new ambulance company will maintain current response times as the city’s population increases at a rate of nearly 5,000 residents yearly, according to a news release from the city.

The annual cost for the ambulance company will be $1 million beginning in 2027.

Madison’s 2026 capital budget will also continue to support the creation of new homes. In 2026, $17.5 million will be available to fund affordable housing.

The budget also keeps historic upgrades to the Madison Community Development Authority’s Triangle public housing development on track.

Once completed, it will add about 1,200 new apartments, nearly quadrupling the number of homes at the Triangle site.

Since Jan. 1, more than 1,900 new homes have been built in Madison. Another 4,690 are under construction.
