The Madison City Council is expected to discuss a new South Madison Plan that calls for hundreds of millions in development, according to a Wisconsin State Journalreport.
The area is loosely bounded by Fish Hatchery Road, Wingra Creek, the Beltline, East Badger Road, and Lake Monona. Residents in the historically neglected area say they welcome the investment in the area that is 79% renters in mostly multifamily units, but they are divided on what type of new housing should be built.
The plan currently includes new housing and retail and many mixed-use buildings up to 12 stories in height. Many area residents are asking for more single-family housing and others are worried about the redevelopment of Dane County’s Alliant Energy Center and the surrounding areas that could promote gentrification and displacement of area residents.Â
