In the first test of the city’s Downtown Plan encouraging the preservation and rehabilitation of historic buildings, the City Council approved a proposal to demolish three buildings in the Langdon Street National Register Historic District to make way for a 71-unit apartment building called The Waterfront. The new structure, ranging from four to six stories in height, will replace the buildings at 619 and 625 N. Henry St. and 145 Iota Court – buildings that some have described as substandard and obsolete. Brothers Chris and Jeff Houden of Palisade Property, who revised their original 79-unit, eight-story design, needed a 14-vote majority from the council. The proposal passed 15-3.
