Chicago-based Core Spaces’ newest proposed student housing development, “Johnson & Broom,” which recently got key approvals from the city’s Plan Commission, received a final blessing from the Madison City Council on Tuesday, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The 1,600-bed complex would comprise four buildings constructed on the block bounded by Johnson, Gorham, and Broom streets.
The company, in agreement with the city and UW–Madison, has promised to provide some future student tenants with lower rents than other market-rate apartments. Ten percent of the complex’s beds would get a 40% discount from the market-rate rents for the next 40 years.
The site’s zoning and a certified survey map for the property were unanimously approved by the council. The project would raze 13 older residential buildings, including the 10-story apartment tower La Ville, to make way for the complex.
