The Madison City Council today will consider plans that call for the former Madison Area Technical College (MATC) site on West Johnson Street to be redeveloped into an 11-story hotel, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

The development from Middleton-based NCG Hospitality would consist of a dual-brand Autograph Collection Hotel and extended-stay Residence Inn Hotel by Marriot with roughly 350 hotel rooms, and the historic MATC building would be converted into 126 lofts and commercial space.

Revisions to NCG’s original development plans, proposed in June, include its agreement to add green space and a grass terrace on West Johnson Street to allow for the planting of additional trees, since construction of the hotel’s driveway would necessitate two mature ash trees on Wisconsin Avenue and a locust tree on Dayton Street to be cut down. A loading dock will be moved from West Johnson Street to West Dayton Street as well, and guest entrances on Wisconsin Avenue will be consolidated.

The development’s zoning changes and permit request for the site at 33 W. Johnson St. were unanimously approved by the city Plan Commission on Monday. NCG anticipates a 24-month construction period but has not said when that would begin.
