On a unanimous vote, the Madison City Council added the unemployed as a protected class, meaning Madison businesses cannot discriminate against unemployed individuals during the hiring process. Alds. Mark Clear, 19th District; John Strasser, 14th District; and Paul Skidmore, 9th District, abstained. Clear said he supported the idea but was worried about unintended consequences and a potential chilling effect on hiring, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report.
