Fourteen votes were needed, and on a 14–5 vote the Madison City Council overrode Mayor Paul Soglin’s veto of a plan to allow grocery stores to offer curbside liquor pickup.
The “click and collect” service would be available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. but customers would have to wait four hours between the time of the online order and pickup. The transaction and age verification would be handled by a store employee in outside parking areas designated for liquor sales, according to media reports.
Walmart on Nakoosa Trail and Pick n’ Save on Junction Road had previously been approved for this service. Opponents, including Soglin, argued that smaller, independent stores without parking lots will be at a significant disadvantage.
