Cherokee Country Club, located on the north side of Madison, is seeking permission to fill acres of wetlands to revamp the 57-year-old course into a premier PGA golf course, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report. According to the club owner, deteriorating conditions and dwindling membership are requiring a complete redesign of the course, which has not had major changes since it opened in 1964. According to an application filed with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Cherokee Country Club will need to mine about 10,000 dump truck loads of sand from under the existing course to raise the playing surface and improve the turf conditions. The renovation will disturb nearly 10 acres of wetlands.
