Chabad of Madison will host a grand opening for a new center at 1711 Monroe St. on April 27, The Capital Times reports, providing space for the Jewish community amid growing need. The center represents a new chapter for the Matusof family, who for nearly 40 years provided services to the community from the Chabad House of Madison on Regent Street, which Rabbi Yona Matusof bought in 1986.
In recent years, due to growing spacial demands, the Matusofs rented additional spaces throughout Madison and hosted events outdoors. The new center has already hosted a few events, including recent Purim celebrations that attracted more than 300 attendees in two nights.
The new center is anticipated to expand Chabad’s reach, and new programming will support seniors and children with special needs. The facility includes a kosher kitchen, classrooms, a Jewish library and a children’s play area. A dedicated teen lounge will bolster the organization’s Hebrew school and teen programming as well.
The grand opening follows Chabad’s capital campaign, announced after the property acquisition in 2020 and supported entirely through local fundraising. An additional $2 million is still needed to fully fund the project.
