After five years of self-funding an informal effort to provide new mothers with food, Qwantese Dourese Winters founded A Bowl of Soul, a program that operates out of Aubergine, Willy Street Co-op’s community space, according to Madison Magazine.
The program, which recently secured sustainable funding and a supporting partner, serves low-income or single Black mothers in the community at no charge.
A Bowl of Soul receives financial support from the Dane County Partners in Equity Food Project Grant Program and Willy Street Co-op’s 2025 Community Reinvestment Fund.
Local ingredients for meals are provided through REAP Food Group’s partner farmers, Alex Booker at Firm Footing Farm and Kim Fruin, chief agriculturalist at FarmHer Greens Regenerative Farmstead and a grower with Occupy Madison at Troy Farms.
Winters delivers meals to three mothers at a time once per week over their first six weeks postpartum. The meals include ingredients known to support postpartum health.
Winters also offers educational postpartum workshops and rehabilitative programming for all new mothers in the community.
