New Year’s resolutions involving climbing may find it difficult to fulfill those goals.

Boulders Climbing Gym closed its east side location on Jan. 1, according to a message on its website.

The climbing gym operated for nearly 30 years, but the statement cited rising prices, an uncertain economy, reduced revenue and reduced traffic as reasons for the closure.

“In addition to this, we’ve been carrying significant debts for many years that have hindered our ability to cover our basic current expenses, despite our efforts to reduce operational overhead,” Boulders CEO and President Max Beavan said in a statement.

Overall, the debt and reduced revenue was too much, and the decision to operate only the downtown location was made.

The downtown Boulders is newer and less worn than the closed location and offers a better location with public transportation and walking.

“Our landlord downtown has offered us flexible rent, which better positions us for long-term success and financial stability, and the projections of a downtown-only business model show that we can achieve and maintain profitability, which is critical for the future of Boulders,” Beavan said.
